Overcoming Anxiety With Mindfulness

Anxiety happens when the body is trying to communicate with us and tells us that there is too much stress built up. Plenty of people understand the impact that continuous stress and fear can have on the body. However, very few seem to grasp the severity of the situation and find a way to remove themselves from the potentially dangerous equation.

Experiencing anxiety is often unavoidable, but the good news is that it can be effectively combated by practising mindfulness. It is an approach that will greatly contribute to the enhancement of moments of joy in life. Below, we have listed helpful ways to overcome the feeling of uneasiness and keep anxiety at bay with the help of mindfulness.

1.      Give your undivided attention to one thing at a time

You can create a mindfulness list and stick to it. Doing one thing at a time and putting your entire focus toward it is an excellent way to avoid the feeling of panic and anxiety. Avoid trying to multitask and let one activity at a time have your attention.

2.      Practice mindfulness through meditation

There are plenty of ways to incorporate meditation into your everyday life. One way is by practising mindfulness – it will provide you with inner peace and infuse you with the calmness you deserve to feel.

3.      Walk around

Being outside is marvellous when it comes to reducing anxiety. Once you are outside, try to experience everything. From the sounds of the birds to the wind gently blowing the leaves to the smell of freshness in the air – pay attention to everything. It is one of the best forms of mindfulness. You don’t have to go to great lengths to walk a lot, a stroll around the block is sometimes more than enough.

4.      Look up

Whenever you are outside, take some time to look up and enjoy the view. Looking at the vastness of the sky will provide you with the serenity you have been dreaming of. Whether it is a summer afternoon blue sky, a chilly winter morning sky, or the night sky filled with stars – it is always a pleasant view.

5.      Breathe

Whenever you feel like anxiety is creeping in, start focusing on your breathing. Stop whatever you are doing, and calm yourself down. Take a few deep breaths, and try to feel them completely. Focus on slow inhaling and exhaling. This is a great and short mindfulness exercise that you can do anywhere, anytime.

Living with anxiety should not be something to get used to. This is why it is encouraged to put your focus on mindfulness as much as you can. One of the most important things is to be persistent. After a while, it will become a habit. Naturally, some days you may feel lesser results, and some days you may reap all the benefits from practising mindfulness. The vital aspect is to move past the negativity that is built up in your body and mind.
