Winter in Canada is often associated with harsh conditions. While most Canadian cities during the winter season average between 5 degrees F to -14 degrees. 

It can be cold most times of the year, and if you’re not embracing the winter season, chances are that this season might be bland and stale for you.

1. Ice Skating 

The best way to enjoy winter is to get outside. Ice skating is one of the most popular sports in Canada. In the 1840s, it was introduced by British garrison officers. Since then, it has gained popularity. 

Canada is famous for winter sports. The country has the most ice rinks in the world over 2860 indoor and 5000 outdoor setups. You can go skating on outdoor rinks or frozen lakes. Ice skating outdoors and surrounded by ice-capped mountains with trees and snow is a breathtaking experience. 

2. Snowshoeing

One of the activities to do during winter is snowshoeing. It’s simple to do, as it’s the same as hiking, just with snowshoes strapped to your boots. It is relatively cheaper compared to generic popular activities.

You can do snowshoeing almost anywhere, even in your backyard, if there is sufficient snow. Make sure that the snow is nice and fluffy. Most hiking trails are the perfect place to do snowshoeing. It is also a great way to burn a few calories while admiring the beauty of Canada. 

3. Fat Biking

Do you want to infuse a little more action in your winter season? Try fat biking. Fat Biking is like mountain biking but with a much wider tire allowing for more traction and grip on snow and ice.  

Cycling in the winter is different than in warmer seasons, adding an extra physical challenge while simultaneously having fun. Many groups offer guided group rides at various times throughout weekdays and weekends so you can enjoy your cycling trip collectively.

4. Tubing/Sledding

Another fun activity is tubing or sledding. Find a hill with enough snow on it so you can slide it down to the bottom. It is a wholesome activity for the whole family, especially children. 

It is cost-effective as well. You only have to buy or rent out a tube or a sled and find various hills in towns across Canada. You can also go to a recreational park or an indoor rink.          

5. Going to Winter Festivals 

Who doesn’t love attending festivals? Without winter festivals, winter is not the same in Canada. There are a lot of winter festivals across the country, and some of the famous festivals are the winter carnival in Quebec, Ottawa’s Winterlude, and snow days which is in the Canadian Rockies

Toronto light festival is one of the most popular festivals that happen in Canada. Every year from late January to early March, light installations of sizes and shapes are installed over the city’s east end. They are manufactured by local and international artists from all over the world. They are accessible to the general audience and the public.

In general, Canada is vast in terms of geographical location. Most native Canadians tend to embrace the winter season. There are quite a lot of activities to do here. But you might also find yourself staying indoors more often due to the cold. You can feel boredom and isolated if you’re not into activities and recreation.
